How To

Basil growing tips

Basil is one herb you can use to make many different dishes in your kitchen. Basil is great for flavouring dishes, as well as adding flavor to soups and sauces, pasta, and desserts. These are some great tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. It is important to choose the right location. Basil is an annually-living plant. It will not survive beyond one season if the location is not right. Basil is tolerant to partial shade, but it prefers full sun. If you're growing it outside, find a spot that has good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should always be planted at least 2 weeks before the last frost date. Place the seeds 1/2 inch deep into small pots containing potting mix. Wrap the pots with clear plastic and place them in a sunny area. Germination usually takes about ten days. Once they are germinated, transfer them to a protected area where the temperatures are at 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seeds are big enough, it's time to transplant them. Take off the plastic wrap and transfer the seedlings to larger containers. Pour the potting mix into each container. Add gravel or pebbles to drain excess moisture. You can add more potting mix if necessary. Place the containers in indirect or sunny light. Keep the plants hydrated to avoid wilting.
  4. Apply a thick layer mulch to the top of your plants after the danger of frost has passed. This will protect them against cold weather and reduce water losses.
  5. Water your plants frequently. Basil requires regular watering in order to thrive. You can use a rain gauge or a water gauge to determine the amount of water that your plants need. Use a timer to automatically turn off irrigation during dry spells.
  6. Take your basil out at the peak of its life. To encourage bushier growth, pick the leaves often.
  7. Use paper towels or screens to dry the leaves. The leaves can be stored in glass jars or bags in their refrigerator.
