How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
