How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix thoroughly. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
