FAQ

How many hours of daylight does a plant really need?

It all depends on what kind of plant you have. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunlight per day. Others prefer 8 hours of indirect sunlight. The majority of vegetables require 10 hours of direct sunshine per 24 hour period.

What vegetables are good to grow together and what are the best?

Growing tomatoes and peppers together is excellent because they both like similar temperatures and soil conditions. They complement each other well since tomatoes need heat to ripen while peppers require cooler temperatures for optimal flavor. To grow them together, you can start seeds indoors around six weeks before planting. Once the weather cools down, transplant the pepper or tomato plants outdoors.

How much space do vegetable gardens need?

The rule of thumb is to use 1/2 pound seed per square foot. So if you have an area of 10 feet by 10 feet (3 meters by 3 meters), you'll need 100 pounds of seeds.

Does my backyard have enough space for a garden?

You might be wondering if you have enough space to grow a vegetable garden if you don't have one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. You just need to plan. Raised beds can be built as low as 6 inches. Containers can be used in place of raised beds. You will still have plenty of produce, regardless of which method you choose.

What is the best vegetable gardening layout?

It all depends on where you live. For easy harvesting, you can plant vegetables together if the area is large. However, if you live in a rural area, you should space out your plants for maximum yield.

How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one of the most versatile herbs you can use in your kitchen. Basil is great for flavouring dishes, as well as adding flavor to soups and sauces, pasta, and desserts. Here are some tips for growing basil indoors at home.

  1. Choose your location carefully. Basil is an annual and will not live more than one season if it isn't in the right spot. Basil likes full sunlight but can be tolerant of partial shade. If you're growing it outside, find a spot that has good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should be planted at least two weeks before the last frost date. Place the seeds 1/2 inch deep into small pots containing potting mix. Wrap the pots with clear plastic and place them in a sunny area. Germination takes approximately ten days. After they have germinated move them into a cool, shaded place where the temperature stays around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. When the seedlings reach maturity, you can transplant them. Place the seedlings in larger containers and remove the plastic wrap. Fill each container with potting mix and add some gravel or pebbles to help drain excess moisture. Add more potting mix as needed. The containers should be placed in a sunny location or under indirect lighting. Mist the plants daily to prevent wilting.
  4. After the danger of frost has passed, apply a thick layer of mulch over the top of the plants. This will prevent them from frost damage and help to reduce water loss.
  5. Water the plants regularly. Basil needs to be hydrated regularly to ensure its survival. You can use a rain gauge or a water gauge to determine the amount of water that your plants need. Use a timer, which will turn off the irrigation when there is no rain.
  6. Take your basil out at the peak of its life. To encourage bushier growth, pick the leaves often.
  7. The leaves can then be dried on paper towels, screens, or other suitable surfaces. Place the leaves in glass jars, bags or in the refrigerator.
