FAQ

What vegetables are good to grow together and what are the best?

Because they are both fond of similar soil conditions and temperatures, it is easy to grow peppers and tomatoes together. They can complement each other because tomatoes require heat to mature, and peppers require lower temperatures for their optimal flavor. Start seeds indoors approximately six weeks prior to planting. When the weather is warm, transplant the pepper and tomato plants outside.

How big is a vegetable gardening space?

A good rule of thumb is that one square foot of soil requires 1/2 pound of seed. You will need 100 pounds of seed if your area is 10 feet by 10 foot (3 meters by 3 metres).

When should you plant herbs?

Plant herbs in spring when the soil temperatures are 55 degrees Fahrenheit. The best results are achieved when they are in full sunshine. To grow basil indoors, place seedlings in pots filled with potting mix and keep them out of direct sunlight until they sprout leaves. Once the plants begin to grow properly, you should move them into bright indirect lights. After about three weeks, transplant them to individual containers and continue to water them regularly.

What is a planting schedule?

A planting calendar is a list that lists plants that should be planted at specific times throughout the year. The goal is to maximise growth while minimizing stress. So, for example, spring crops such as lettuce, spinach, or peas should not be sown before the last frost date. Later spring crops include cucumbers, squash, and summer beans. The fall crops include potatoes and carrots.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
