How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
